Bates Cabins- Smoky Mountain Cabin Rentals are nestled on 2 acres of the former Jacobs Ruby Mine surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains this home is ideal for families with small children and gem mining enthusiasts.  The property is open and airy and the view of the Smoky Mountains from the front porch of this vacation rental is ideal.  For the kids there is a large front yard with a swing set as well as assorted toys in the shed.  The back of the property features a creek as well.

 

For the gem mining enthusiasts there is a private flume that is available only to the residents of Cabin 1.  The former Jacob's Ruby Mine, in fact, much of Cowee Valley, was well known for it's gem-quality rubies and sapphires.  Other gemstones that can be found are Rhodolite Garnets, Moonstone, Sillimanite, and Rutile.  Everything you need to find these gems is there on the property.  There is virgin, unsalted ore, buckets, a shovel, screens, and a pump to bring water to the flume. 

 

This log cabin rental is situated between two other mines still open here in Cowee Valley.  Sheffield Mine, featured on the travel channel, is about one mile east.  Cherokee Mine, where the largest star ruby ever found in North America was found a few years ago, is about 1 1/2 miles west.  Also close to Cabin 1 is Cowee Valley Lapidary where you can have your gem stones professionally cut and set.   

 

This cabin rental is right off the paved road and has relatively flat ground which makes ideal for motorcycle enthusiasts as well.  The large yard offers plenty of area to maneuver and park your trailers.
